How to tell it is bed bugs
Bites are the sign people notice first and the least reliable one to judge by. Bed bug bites tend to arrive overnight in a line or a tight cluster, on skin that was against the bed, while flea bites concentrate around ankles and lower legs. Some people show no reaction at all, so one person in a shared bed being unmarked proves nothing either way.
The evidence worth looking for is on the bed itself. Run a torch along the mattress piping, the seams of the headboard and the joints of a wooden frame. Dark spots the size of a full stop are digested blood, and you may also find shed skins, which are pale and hollow. A heavy infestation carries a sweet, musty smell in a room that is otherwise clean.
Why shop-bought sprays usually make it worse
Bed bugs in the UK are widely resistant to the pyrethroid insecticides sold in supermarkets and hardware shops. A domestic spray tends to kill the few you can see and leave the rest, and what it reliably achieves is disturbance.
Disturbed bed bugs move. They travel along skirting, under carpet edges and through service holes into the next room, which turns one bedroom into a floor. A job that has already been sprayed takes longer than one that has not, so if you have found them, the most useful thing you can do is leave them alone and ring us.
What treatment involves, and what we need from you first
This is a two-part job: what we do, and what you do before we arrive. We talk the preparation through with you on the phone, because how well the room is prepared is the single biggest factor in whether the first treatment holds.
That usually means stripping the bed and washing bedding hot, bagging what cannot be washed, clearing the floor and pulling furniture off the walls so the edges are reachable. We then treat the room, and the rooms either side where the evidence points that way. Expect more than one visit. Most treatments do not kill eggs, so a follow-up timed to when those hatch is what finishes the job rather than an optional extra.
