Wasp and hornet nest removal in Bedfordshire
Wasps are the reason most people ring us between June and September. A nest in a loft or under a soffit can go from unnoticed to unbearable in a fortnight.
Why wasp nests turn urgent so quickly
A queen starts a nest the size of a golf ball in spring. By late summer the same nest can hold thousands of workers, and it is the late-season colony that causes most of the trouble. As the nest stops rearing young, workers lose their food source and become far more aggressive around people.
That is also when disturbing a nest is at its most dangerous. Wasps release an alarm pheromone when threatened, which brings the rest of the colony out, and stings from a defending nest come in numbers rather than singly.
Where we find them in Bedfordshire homes
Older housing across Bedford and Ampthill gives wasps easy access under tile and behind soffit boards, and lofts are the single most common location we attend. Air bricks, gaps at the verge, garden sheds, compost bins and holes in banks and lawns account for most of the rest.
Hornets are less common but we do see them, particularly around wooded ground near the Greensand Ridge. They are larger, quieter and nest in hollow trees and outbuildings more often than in roof spaces.
How we deal with it
Treatment is usually a single visit. We identify the entry point, treat the nest directly and leave it to the colony to carry the treatment through. In most cases activity stops within a few hours and the nest is dead within a day.
We will tell you before we start whether the nest needs physically removing or whether it is better left in place. An old nest is not reused the following year, so removal is often unnecessary unless it is somewhere it will cause a problem.
Common questions
Can you remove a wasp nest the same day?
Across Bedford and the Bedfordshire towns, in season, we usually can. We start at 6am seven days a week and wasp work is prioritised because a disturbed nest is a genuine risk. Should I try to treat a wasp nest myself?
We would not advise it. Shop-bought products rarely reach the nest itself, and a partial treatment makes a colony far more defensive. Nests in lofts and at height are where most stings happen.
Will the wasps come back to the same nest next year?
No. A nest is used for a single season and abandoned. New queens overwinter elsewhere and start fresh nests in spring, though they often choose the same kind of location, which is why some houses seem to get one most years.
