The council's pest control in Bedford has changed hands. What it means if you have rats or mice
The council still offers pest treatments for homes in the borough, but from 21 September they are carried out by an outside contractor and booked through an online service.
What has changed
The council announced on 21 September that domestic pest control in the borough is now delivered by an external contractor rather than by the council itself. Its notice says fees and charges stay the same, and that the discounted service for households receiving Council Tax Support continues. Booking has moved to an online service on the council's own pest control page, with a telephone number for people who would rather ring.
That is the whole of the change as the council describes it. Nothing in the notice suggests the service is being withdrawn, and nothing here is a criticism of it: contracts change hands, and a council outsourcing a service is routine.
What has not changed
If you rent, start with your landlord or letting agent rather than paying for a treatment yourself. Where an infestation comes from the state of the building, gaps under a door, broken airbricks, a hole where a pipe enters, it is usually the landlord's to put right, and in our experience a treatment without that repair is money spent twice.
Businesses are a separate question. The council's domestic service is for homes, so a shop, pub, kitchen or office needs a commercial arrangement either way.
Worth checking before you book anybody, us included
Ask what the price covers. A rodent job is rarely one visit: baiting, checking and removing what has been eaten usually means coming back, and a quoted price that covers only the first call is not comparable with one that covers the work to the end.
Ask when somebody can actually attend, not when the booking is confirmed. Ask what happens if the problem comes back, and who you speak to if it does. And ask what preparation is needed before the visit, because for some treatments there is quite a lot, and a technician arriving at a property that is not ready is a wasted appointment for both of you.
Why this is landing now
Late September is when rodents come indoors across Bedfordshire. The fields around the villages are cut, the nights turn, and mice and rats that were living perfectly well outside start looking for somewhere warm with food in it. In our experience calls climb from the last week of September and stay high until the weather turns again.
So the change has arrived in the week households start noticing scratching in a loft or droppings under the sink. If you are dealing with that now, the route you choose matters less than acting early: a pair of mice in September is a straightforward job, and the same pair in December is not.
